Overview
As a custodian of all geoscience information in Botswana, the Institute (BGI) seeks to implement a corporate data warehouse to strengthen its functions. The enhancement of National Integrated Geoscience Information System (NIGIS) will result in the new and better information management systems which will enable effective geoscience data management and distribution to customers or stakeholders. The enhancement of NIGIS addresses the shortfalls that are being faced on the current system.
Promoting mineral exploration in the country requires easy access to geoscience information by investors across the globe.ย This project, funded by Botswana Government through National Development Plan 11 Budget, will provide pre-competition data packages through a robust web enabled system on a real-time basis. The project has commenced during Quarter 2 of Financial Year 2018/19 and is anticipated to take three (3) years.
The first phase of the project, is planned to complete in December 2018 and involves consultation of exploration companies and government stakeholders to define an industry agreed and compliant Statement of User Requirements (SOUR) for the envisioned system. The second phase, which will take two years will comprise design of IT and IS infrastructure, upload of geoscience data concluding with NIGIS system implementation and rollout.
