The geology of quarter degree sheet 2227D is described. Granitoid rocks underlie about three-quarters of the maparea and unmetamorphosed Palapye group strata the remainder. The oldest granitoid rocks are a suite of (G1) grey gneisses with prominent layered amphibolite units and minor meta-quartzite and magnetite-quartzite layers. G2 Migmatites derived in part from the G1 suite crop out in the northeast quadrant, while in the northwest two (G3) deformed, felsic intrusives are injected into the gneisses. The area betweeen Tswapong and Tshweneng Hills is largely underlain by brecciated G3 quartz monzonite. The Palapye grop is divided into four formal lithostratigraphic formations, two of which are largely arenaceous, and the other two largely argillaceous. Alluvial and elluvial superficial deposits cover about 15 percent of the granitoid rocks. Mafic dykes form prominent lineaments but are rarely exposed.ย
