The quality of water in our streams, rivers, dams etc has declined due to excessive contamination by excessive amounts of some constituents such as algae, nutrients, suspended particles, the use of agro-chemicals and general pollution from diffuse sources initiated by storm water runoff from urban, forestry, commercial industries and construction land uses. These problems have intensified through the ages in response to the increased growth and concentration of populations and industrial centres. Often, the problems have been viewed as inevitable consequences of community development and sometimes even have been accepted as evidence of affluence and progress.
