The geology of quarter degree sheets 2327A and B is described. Over two-thirds of the map-area is underlain by high grade metamorphic rocks. In the east they consist of layered paragneisses and orthogneisses referred to as the Ellington Gneiss. A suite of migmatits, preserving remnants of the layered gneisses, and areally dominant in the west, is referred to as the allochthonous Mahalapye migmatite. Middle Precambrian Palapye group clastic sedimentary rocks, preserved in fault controlled blocks, overlie the metamorphic rocks in the northeast. In the south, Karoo strata is faulted against the migmatites by the Mhalapshwe fault.ย
