The Kalatraverse 1 project of 1973 developed from the necessity to learn something of the bedrock conditions and mineral potential in the sand-covered Kalahari region of Botswana. Since its inception in 1948 the Geological Survey Department had devoted its main exploration efforts to the geologically mapping of the reasonably exposed one fifth of the country lying adjacent to the Transvaal and Rhodesian borders in the east.
